Harvest the culinary delight that is an easy and essential part of every kitchen garden with BOXHILL's Chives Organic Seeds. Otherwise known as Allium Tuberosum, these hardy clusters are edible, ornamental, perennial...and utterly delicious!
Seeds arrive in a quatrefoiled, folded package -- both the quatrefoil shape and seeds, themselves, were thought to be travel partners on the ancient Silk Road. The smallest of all the Alliums, chives are considered by some to be the only species of Allium native to both the Old World and the New. The sulfur smell of the plant is said to repel garden insect pests while the flowers attract beneficial pollinators. This clumping onion survives winter in the Northeast and often blooms in early May. Be sure to let your chives flower though, they have a wonderful, oniony edible flower!
Start these seeds indoors, about a week before outdoor soils can be worked. Keep them watered, but not wet. Transplant them outdoors, in clumps, when chives are about 3" tall. Or, direct sow the seeds outdoors in a weed-free area at any time of the year. Chives grow slowly at first, but are extremely hardy and fast-growing once they are established. For the best culinary quality, cut the chives every week or two. Enjoy their edible pink flowers!
