How to Choose an Outdoor Dining Table

Outdoor Dining spaces are one of my favorite places to design, one of the main reasons there is so much opportunity to really make this space sing and come to life. From the table to the chairs, to the overhead lighting, and then the fun bar carts and pots, and the outdoor rug underneath the table, there is just so much you can do with an outdoor dining space. But, it all begins by choosing the right size table. Whether you like old or new pieces, what makes a space unique is really the mix between high and low pieces. Mixing it up a bit, have fun pairing your pieces.

Choose Round or Square Tables for Small Outdoor Dining Spaces

In cozy outdoor spaces like a breakfast nook, round or square tables are ideal choices. Round tables work especially well because they can fit snugly into a corner, making the most of limited space. However, keep in mind that round tables sacrifice some surface area for serving dishes by sacrificing corners. Both round and square tables are perfect for couples and small families looking for a cozy outdoor dining experience.

Choose Large Rectangular Tables for Large Outdoor Dining Spaces

One of the fantastic aspects of outdoor spaces is their forgiving nature. You don't need to adhere to the expectations that formal indoor dining rooms have. Outdoors offer more flexibility and the freedom to be looser with your style and space. Whether you have an outdoor dining room or an open, airy outdoor plan, a large rectangular dining table can seat your entire family and all your dinner party guests. They allow you to easily squeeze in an extra chair when needed and provide ample space for serveware and décor. Make sure to leave at least 3 feet of space between the table, the wall, and other furniture to ensure comfortable flow in your dining space.

Maximize Your Corner Spaces with Bench Seating

Choose Expanding Tables and Stackable Chairs for Versatile Outdoor Dining Spaces

Opting for expanding tables and stackable chairs is a savvy choice for crafting versatile outdoor dining areas. Expandable tables offer flexibility by adapting to different guest numbers, making them perfect for both intimate family meals and larger gatherings. Meanwhile, stackable chairs are space-efficient, allowing you to neatly store them when not in use, liberating precious floor space. This duo combines practicality and smart design, ideal for small outdoor dining spaces or situations where guest lists vary. By selecting expanding tables and stackable chairs, you maximize the functionality of your outdoor dining area while keeping it uncluttered and adaptable.

How to Calculate the Right Size Table

  • Measure the length and width of your outdoor dining space.
  • Subtract 6 feet from both the length and width to allow a 3-foot clearance on all sides.
  • The result is the maximum recommended size for your outdoor dining table. For example, if you have a 12’ x 9½’ space, the maximum table size would be 72” x 40”.

Allow about 2 feet of space per person at a rectangular table. As a rule of thumb:

  • 48” rectangularl/square table – seats 4
  • 42-48”diameter round table – seats 4
  • 60-72” rectangular table – seats 6
  • 60” diameter round table – seats 6-8
  • 80-87” rectangular table – seats 8
  • 92-108” rectangular table – seats 10
  • 120” rectangular table – table seats 12

Additional Tips

For versatility, consider an expandable table with leaves that can seat more people when needed and feel more spacious when it’s just your family.

In square outdoor rooms, small spaces, or dual-purpose rooms, round pedestal tables are space-saving and great for conversations.

In tight spaces, you can create an outdoor dining nook in a corner with bench seating that can be slid under the table when not in use.

With these considerations and calculations, you can confidently choose the right table size for your outdoor space, whether it's cozy or expansive, and ensure a comfortable and stylish outdoor dining experience.
